We bought a copy of Engage as soon as it was released by our friends at Articulate. Engage is designed to generate Flash learning interactions which can be dropped in to Articulate e-learning projects to add more interactivity. However, in the age of just in time performance support, we believe you can use Engage on its own to produce short self-contained learning interactions. With this in mind we took Engage out for a Kineo road test. Engage Overview Once you launch Engage you get a series of learning interactions you can choose to customise. There are ten standard learning interactions you can choose from which are:
These give you a fair degree of choice to select the most appropriate learning interaction. It is incredibly easy to produce these learning interactions within a few minutes. You simply choose the interaction you want; type or paste your content into the relevant boxes; add any images or audio; and then publish. Engage then creates a folder with the html and swf file to launch the learning interaction you have created. You can also publish to a Word document if you want. The learning interactions are simple but effective. We set out below some examples of content we created using different interactions. Short Module on Handling Bad News Engage is not a full e-learning authoring tool which produces SCORM compliant content. It just creates stand alone learning interactions. However, these can be imported into any Articulate e-learning project to add extra life and interactivity. We have not therefore rated Engage using our normal Rapid E-learning Scorecard, but summarise our views below. Ease of use Engage is incredibly easy to use. We would challenge anyone not to be able to produce a nice learning interaction in 30 minutes. Instructional design flexibility You are limited to the ten learning interaction types but you can be creative. Our Handling Bad News module is actually built using the timeline interaction! Ability to incorporate existing content You can import images and audio with ease. You can also cut and paste content. The price tag: Engage is a very cost-effective tool, with an individual licence available for $399. You can download a demo copy at www.articulate.com and you can also buy Engage and Articulate at the Rapid E-learning Store. Agree or disagree with this review? Let us know at rapid@kineo.com.
