Stand out from the crowd: about the Princess Royal Training Awards

When you’ve put lots of time, energy and imagination into designing an excellent L&D initiative, don’t you want to shout about it? Wouldn’t it be great to have an award that’d help you celebrate, stand out from the crowd and get recognition?

The Princess Royal Training Awards, developed by The City & Guilds Group, is a new honour for employers in the UK who have created outstanding training and skills development programmes. I had a chat with Michael Osbaldeston, Special Adviser for Skills Development at the City & Guilds Group. He answers our questions about the new awards and what this means for businesses.

What are the Princess Royal Training Awards?

The Princess Royal Training Awards will recognise the positive impact of training and skills development programmes on business success in the UK.

Tell us more about excellent training and L&D initiatives

We want to see that training/L&D plays a crucial role towards business transformation. Development initiatives can result in many business benefits. For example they can drive sales and bottom line benefits, generate savings, improve productivity or increase customer satisfaction.

You can also see some benefits in terms of employee engagement. The training may have increased staff retention, driven better engagement, boosted employee morale or changed employee behaviour.

These are only examples – surprise us!

What type of initiatives are you looking for?

Both short-term training schemes and ongoing learning and development strategies will be recognised, if they have resulted in a demonstrably positive impact on the organisation.

What are the categories?

There are no categories. As long as organisations can demonstrate L&D best practice that leads to outstanding business impact, their size or sector doesn’t make a difference.

What’s in it for the organisations who apply?

The awards are free to enter and all applicants will receive detailed feedback on their submission, which provides them with another chance to reflect on what they are doing and where they may be able to improve. What’s offered is not unlike a consultancy service, by the City & Guilds Group, a leader in skills development.

Anything else?

Successful applicants will be able to display the Princess Royal Training Awards quality mark, gaining a significant competitive edge.

What’s behind the name?

HRH The Princess Royal is the President of the City & Guilds Group Institute. She is involved in many training and skills initiatives in the UK and we’re delighted she has given her name to the awards.

Who can apply?

The awards are open to all employers in the UK. Private, public and non-profit organisations of all sizes and from all sectors can enter.

What’s the process?

The selection process involves a written application and a shortlisted organisations will receive a visit by our assessors. A final Commission, presided by The Princess Royal, will make a decision about who receives an award.
