When you think of the mother of all Learning Management Systems, 24 cardboard boxes tucked away at a Minnesota library probably doesn't come to mind. Yet that is the home of PLATO, the first computer-based learning system and online community. Many LMSs today are born out of the same basic concepts that Donald Bitzer developed for PLATO in 1960. We’ve come a long way since then.
Digital learning in the twenty-first century
Put simply, people are learning differently to when PLATO was first introduced. As well as moving through learning in a linear fashion, learners want to be able to dip in and out of learning on-the-job and at the point of need – requiring the system to act as a performance support tool.
We are in the established world of ‘resources not courses’, amidst the ever growing popularity of microlearning and spaced rehearsal. The one-off learning event is fading out fast. That makes it more vital than ever to see the bigger picture - to view the work we do as part of a symbiotic relationship with a whole host of other mediums and technologies.
As Vincent Van Gogh once said: 'Great things are done by a series of small things brought together'. It’s in analysing those small things in relation to each other that we can create better learner journeys. We need to understand where the learning fits in to a wider framework; how the learner will find out about it; why will they want to do it; how, when and where they will access it; what that experience will feel like; and what they’re expected to do afterwards.
But to do that, we need your help. Our Learning Content and Platforms Team wants to find out how effective, efficient, satisfying and accessible learning platforms are for the modern workplace learner. We want to survey the state of learning platforms - to get a really good idea about what's working and what's not - so that you, Kineo and the industry as a whole can provide a better service.
