6 Great Reasons to Innovate in 2016

2016 is the year to drive innovation in your workplace learning, or risk being left behind.

There’s no doubt about it, the different learning options available to L&D teams have grown exponentially over the last 20 years. The opportunity to create some structured and creative blends has never been greater, but frequently we see organisations who are reluctant to move away from tried and tested face-to-face due to legacy (why fix it, it’s worked for decades?) and the stand-alone eLearning modules (that in isolation, don’t really add significant value to any party) and create more engaging, immersive learning experiences for their learners.

Learners are demanding more, and there are a number of factors influencing their demands. Below, we have outlined 6 great reasons why 2016 is ‘the’ year to drive innovation in your workplace learning that will set you up for success.

  1. The evolving workforce

    The first reason is probably the most important one: By 2020, millennials, or Gen-Y, (those people born between 1980 and 2000) will make up 50% of the global workforce[1]. Why does this matter you ask? Well, the way in which they want to work is important; their desire to learn, fluidly, on-demand and their requirement for constant feedback and coaching from their managers gives L&D departments a lot to think about in terms of delivering the kind of blended learning and career progression that millennials genuinely need (See Paul Westlake’s recent blog ‘Training at the Speed of Need’).

Although there is rightly a lot of interest in the fact that millennials are taking over the workplace, it’s important to remember that whilst 50% of the global workforce will be millennials, much of today’s workforce is still made up of the Gen-X and Baby-Boomer generations. Will they be more reluctant to work with new technologies and in a less-structured manner? Although, why wait until millennials completely take over the workforce to put learning into place that is more suitable for them?   1. We need to go mobile

    We live in a multi-device world where many people own several devices on which to access the internet. In Singapore, 99% of Millennials use a smartphone[2] and the population as a whole own an average of 3.3 devices each[3]. Users in South Korea surpassed PC search engine queries with mobile queries as far back as 2012.[4].  Developing elearning that can be used on different devices is key to engaging employees – particularly those millennials who are the most technology-savvy of all users and who routinely use their own technology for work purposes. Thinking about a mobile-first strategy is no longer a thought for the future, it is the now.

  2. Internet Access

    It may come as no surprise to you that the use of the internet across the globe is growing. Here in Asia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea are leading the way with over 80% of the population having access to the internet[5] at high speed and brilliant bandwidth. China, Vietnam and Malaysia are hot on their heels; in fact, most countries in Asia have increased their access to the internet significantly since the turn of the century. With the introduction of Wi-Fi, the internet is accessible in most public places, which in turn increases the opportunities for learners to jump online and learn.

  1. Authoring Technology

    Of course, for learners to be able to ‘jump online and learn’ and use their preferred device, it’s important to provide them with the type of elearning which enables them to do that.   1. It’s measurable

    xAPI, or ‘Tin Can’ as it was previously known, has allowed organisations the facility to measure and learn from how learners are interacting with a variety of different tools. The upshot is that most learning experiences are measurable and if you think Big Data will help you predict and analyse your way to success, then it’s probably time to start thinking beyond SCORM.
