Three years ago, Helen Potts began a new career path as a carer. She chose to re-train at the age of 57, and took part in Home Instead Senior Care’s specialised Dementia Training programme. The programme is the only one of its kind in the UK.
Before Helen came across the programme, she had left her office job to become her mother’s full time carer. She did that around the clock for two years, until her mum unfortunately passed away.
Helen wasn’t sure what to do next, but she knew she couldn’t go back to her office job. She had enjoyed caring but didn’t have any qualifications beyond her own experiences.
That’s when she came across a company called Home Instead Senior Care, which provides support for older people so they can receive care from the comfort of their own homes.
Home Instead provides training for the right candidate, and Helen was invited to participate in the in-house Dementia Training programme.
The programme has been accredited by City & Guilds Kineo, giving it an independent stamp of quality. It’s just one more way for Home Instead to demonstrate its commitment to excellence. It also helps the company to attract, recruit and retain the talent needed to ensure its clients are taken care of properly.
But the programme was just the beginning for Helen. After she learned how to help people living with dementia, she went on to complete the Level 3 QCF in Health and Social Care and taken on full-time at Home Instead’s Darlington Office. She was also nominated for the Dementia Care Award at the Regional Great British Care Awards.
When asked about her experience as a carer, Helen said:
"It’s a wonderful job and I’m meeting so many interesting people. I feel like I’m the one learning, even though I’m supporting all these people."
With the right training, Helen has been able to change careers and find success in a new field. But she isn’t the only one who benefits. Home Instead has a qualified, award-winning and motivated carer working for them.
