Canon - Rapid E-learning

This case study shows how Canon and Kineo partnered in three key areas to deliver effective e-learning, hosted in a portal, in two languages, in just three weeks. The success factors were:
  1. Design of an engaging e-learning module that reflected Canon’s values.
  2. Close working through a fast-track collaborative development process.
  3. Rapid development of a low-cost delivery model, that tracked progress.

Below is a summary of the approach we took. You can get the full case study here.

The challenge

“I want e-learning – and I need it quickly…”

Canon was exhibiting at DRUPA, the world’s largest media and print event in Germany in June 2008. They were expecting to have up to 25,000 business conversations at the event. Canon’s performance at this event would have a major influence on the financial performance of the Print Division.

Canon would have over 100 staff attending the event every day, over 500 in total from various countries. Thus it was critical to support and train these staff in Canon’s key messages and approach.

Canon decided to enhance their support to staff attending the DRUPA event with a short e-learning module. They approached Kineo on the 15th April to see if it was possible to develop and deliver the module by the 2nd May, with a German version one week later. It needed to be engaging, on brand, assessed and tracked. No time for hanging around…

Steps to success

1. An engaging e-learning design which reflected Canon’s values

The quality of the design was critical to ensure the learning reflected and reinforced canon’s values. For this reason the decision was taken to develop a high-quality design using custom Flash rather than an authoring tool. This required very close collaboration between the Canon and Kineo team to prototype and iterate designs very quickly. The final design approach is shown below.

The Canon stand was specifically designed for DRUPA and aimed to create a natural flow for the customer journey with key areas such as a commercial print zone. We therefore created an interactive stand guide to walk staff through the key features, such as the Canon customer lounge (below, right).

2. A fast-track, collaborative development process

The timescales meant that the traditional models and project plans would not deliver the content in time. We therefore adopted a very collaborative method. The key to the fast-track approach and rapid response was based on:

  • rapid prototyping of the design – get to first version quickly and iterate
  • a small dedicated team: designer, developer, SME as core team
  • quality inputs and fast reviews from the SME
  • close working on live calls to ensure fast turnaround
  • light touch project management – with close working there’s no need for heavy documentation

The SME provided core content in PowerPoint form which Kineo took and developed as an interactive treatment. This treatment was reviewed through conference call sessions and changes made the same day for further iterations.

As soon as the final content was agreed we started work on the German version and this was delivered a week after the English version.

3. A fast low-cost delivery model that tracked progress

In order to meet the fast timetable required, Kineo set up and branded a Moodle LMS site. Kineo has used Moodle Open Source LMS as a highly branded, tactical deployment tool for many solutions. The site was hosted by Kineo and Canon employees could self-register on the site. The home page of the Moodle site is below.

The Moodle site was used to provide additional resources and a discussion forum was added for staff to be able to add questions. The screen below shows an additional resource (a detailed show floor plan) that has been opened.

Results

Over 400 people went through the e-learning prior to the conference, with over 90% of those completing the assessment passing first time. The e-learning helped ensure that the Canon staff attending understood:

  • the nature of the event and Canon’s objectives
  • Canon’s key messages
  • the Canon stand
  • the customer journey
  • how to handle customers

The feedback was very positive with less than 20 user queries. The e-learning initiative helped Canon ensure that they met their DRUPA conference targets.

“The event went exceptionally well, achieving and exceeding most of our targets. The senior management team were very complimentary about the whole project.”
