The challenge

The Institute of Directors (IoD) was established in 1906 is recognised globally as a leading body of excellence in corporate governance and board and director development. Its professional development programmes are highly regarded but are delivered predominantly via face-to-face workshops.

The IoD was restructuring its syllabus and wanted to deliver more of its learning online, so needed to create new elearning materials and a flexible platform to provide learner access.

The IoD chose Kineo to create the elearning and provide a branded Moodle LMS. Both had to have a professional look and feel to appeal to a director level audience.

The solution

The IoD materials are technical, and deal with intricate subjects including corporate governance, finance and legal issues. The aim of the online materials is not to replace the face-to-face workshops, but to provide an opportunity to try out what they have learnt.

Bringing it all together: The Moodle site

A key requirement was for an IoD portal they could manage themselves. Moodle, the open source LMS, is ideal as it provides the freedom to add and remove content any time. City & Guilds Kineo’s developers integrated the IoD Moodle site with its CRM system so new users are automatically created and then given access to online materials once they have attended the relevant workshop.

Moodle also offers quiz building functionality so the IoD can build their own quizzes, and there is a range of social networking features to extend a community of practice around the content.

Making it happen – marketing

You’ve heard us say before: the greatest elearning will sit on the shelf if you don’t market it effectively to the target audience. Even more so when it’s a commercial solution like the IoD’s paid for programmes. Kineo created an emagazine called the Directors’ Knowledge Toolkit, which includes a video welcome message from Ryan Ahern, Director of Learning and Development, key information about the programme, and sample content. It also offers a diagnostic analysis tool so potential delegates can determine what their development needs are. And it’s proved to be a successful sales and communications tool.

The results

Since the relaunch the feedback has been very positive:

  • A Over 3,000 users have logged into the Learning Zone since its relaunch
  • The March 2012 certificate exam usage was 75% higher than in November 2011 and the take up of the Learning Zone provision was just as high
  • The site logs for the week containing the March 2012 exam peaked at 23,777 student visits
