This market has been recently shaken up by the introduction of the DimDim open source product and the advent of hosted software-as-a-service solutions, so we thought we’d see what the state of the union was in this sector.
A virtual classroom is a tool for delivering classroom-like sessions, live over the Internet. Along with other online learning initiatives this provides opportunities to continue to deliver learning cost-effectively at a time when the recession is forcing all organizations to review their training costs. And with the rise in hosted solutions you don’t need to buy software or enter into long term agreements. You can now buy virtual classroom services as you need them. In researching this paper we found a few nice surprises that we weren’t expecting, and some really top quality products that are setting a benchmark for others to follow. We bet it won’t stay still very long so consider it a February 2009 snapshot, but at 20 pages this PDF is a good an overview of these tools as you’re likely to need.
