Moodle
Psst...  want a free Learning Management System?

What’s the big idea?

Saving money. One of our favourite big ideas. Moodle is a free open source learning management system. It’s simple to install. It works. It’s free. People sure are nice on the internet.

Moodle, like Skype, is just 3 years old. It doesn't have 65m members but over 50,000 organisations now use Moodle.

Moodle is the brainchild of Martin Dougiamas, who designed the program while working on his PhD at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia. He developed it as a tool for his dissertation which was on a Socio-constructivist approach to learning. So Moodle originally excelled in features which supported this approach to education, in particular through its very user-friendly discussion forum layout that includes 'mug shots' of the participants as an aid towards community building.

What's in it for learning?

If you want a learning management system that does the basics, for a rather competitive price compared to the big vendors out there, look no further.
