Hi,

Happy new year to all our readers! Hope your resolutions are going well. We'll spare you the full Kineo list, but one of them is to share knowledge every day. So, here we go.

Many commentators think that informal learning will be the most talked about learning topic of 2006. We're starting the conversation now with our insight report, "13 Ways to Manage Informal Learning", available for free.

A big part of informal learning is communities, and this month we hear the view on how it works in the public sector from Emma Goss of the IDeA. Anyone looking to establish a learning community will find her views interesting.

If you'd like to talk about the ideas here, or other ones, I'd love to hear from you. E-mail me at newsletter@kineo.com

Wishing you and yours a great 2006!

Stephen

1. 13 Ways to Manage Informal Learning: Free Report

Informal learning is, as you've heard by now, 80 per cent of all learning. So if you're not managing it, are you missing four fifths of the opportunities to engage learners? Or can it be managed at all? Mark Harrison  has looked at these issues and presents his findings in this pragmatic insight report - available for free just click here. (PDF file 461k).

Check out our other Insight Reports.

2. The January Interview: Emma Goss of the Improvement and Development Agency

Learning Pool, the e-learning service offered by the IDeA to local government, is a prime example of a flourishing community of practice. Anyone looking to grow a community, especially in public sector, has something to learn from it. Emma Goss talked me through its successes and where it's going.

Hear what Emma had to say here.

3. January's Big Ideas: Customer Service

Each month we focus on big ideas that have the potential to transform your learning. This month we're looking at customer service, and how technology-enabled learning can improve how you attract, win and retain customers.

Improving customer service is going to be a big public sector topic for 2006, so get ahead of the curve by reading up on our customer service ideas.

You can also review all our previous big ideas.

4. Surveys Part 1: Audio Learning Results

Our survey on audio learning is now closed. Thanks to all who participated.

The results make for very interesting reading. The big news is that over half of respondents use audio learning at least occasionally, and over half use an MP3 player for their audio learning. Clearly this channel for learning is going to keep growing in importance in 2006.

You can read the key findings here.

5. Surveys Part 2: Learning Communities

As we mention above, Learning Pool is a great example of an online learning community, where people can connect with each other and support each other. Are there others out there?

Kineo and Futuremedia are conducting a survey to explore the benefits of online learning communities for professional development. If you run a learning community, are thinking about one for your organisation or institution, or even if you think they won't work for you, please take part in our survey. All participants will get a full copy of the results.
