>> Editor's note:

Welcome to 2011! Hope you’re well rested and ready to do it all again – maybe a little differently –this decade. We’ve decided to set the controls for warp speed from the outset this year:

  • We’re delighted to welcome E-learn Consult to the Kineo family, who today become Kineo China. We’re delighted to be ever closer to our global clients, so many of whom are already there, and it’s really exciting to tap into this dynamic and fascinating country. Much more news to come on this in the next few months.
  • Totara LMS, our custom distribution of Moodle, will launch officially in the UK later this month. We think it’s going to change how you think about the LMS. Totara builds on all the great features of Moodle, and offers so much more for corporates. Come and see us and get some free M&S treats at Learning Technologies in London, ASTD in San Jose, or join a webinar to find out how you can get more for less from your LMS through Totara.
  • With so much to talk about, why don’t we all join in the discussion? We’ve set up a new ELearning Professionals Group on LinkedIn to do just that. More details below.

With tool reviews, a BBC case study, top tips and more, we’re pretty clear about our new year’s resolutions at Kineo: keep growing, keep sharing, keep learning. Hope we keep it interesting for you in 2011…

Stephen

1.  Totara open source LMS: Demo webinars and official launch at Learning Technologies

We are launching Totara LMS officially in the UK at Learning Technologies at the end of the month. .  Not long now…

Totara is a new kind of LMS for business. It’s a distribution of Moodle, the world’s leading open source LMS, so you know it’s built on a great foundation. With enterprise features including individual development plans, competencies, team management, classroom management and dashboard reporting, Totara is designed specifically to meet the needs of corporates. Totara is fully open source and available on an annual subscription basis for support, updates and patches. Find out more about Totara here.

We’re running a series of Totara webinar demos on January 18th and 24th at 2pm UK time.  You can sign up for the one that suits you here.

To see it up close and personal, come and join us at Learning Technologies in London on January 26th and 27th for the official launch, with a seminar on 26th at 11.45 to showcase its features in full.

We are also seeking Totara Partners, who can support and implement Totara around the world. If you are an e-learning company, you could become a Totara Partner to offer your clients a leading open source learning platform; and extend both your services and revenue opportunities. We are keen to help companies grow their services and revenues through being a Totara Partner. Find out more here.

2.  Case study: BBC Making Websites Accessible

Accessibility may not be the subject that gets your heart pounding. But can we make the subject of accessible website design enthralling, memorable and effective? That’s what the BBC asked us. We partnered with Designs on Learning to answer the question.Find out how in this month’s case study. It’s got Merlin in it. What more do you want?

Read the case study here:

3.  Announcing Kineo China

It’s another landmark for us this month. We’re delighted to announce the E-Learn Consult, a privately owned e-learning company in China, has joined the Kineo team and today becomes Kineo China. China presents so much potential, that we felt that as a global e-learning and LMS company, we had to be there. So many of our clients, including HSBC, M&S, Tesco and Vodafone are there already of course, and we want to be where our clients are. It’s great to have Deland Lin, CEO of Kineo China, and his team onboard.

You can find out more about Kineo China here, and here’s a quick introduction to Deland.

And of course, if you’re interested in working with us in China, get in touch at info@kineo.com.

4.  Market update: State of play in China

So you’ve probably deduced from that little newsbite that we think China’s interesting. But why? What’s happening in e-learning and LMS spaces in China? We thought we’d share some of the insights from our team there in this month’s market update.

Read this month’s update here.

5.  Tool review: Hot Lava mobile

New year, new tools for us to review…this month we plunge our hands into the fiery heart of the Hot Lava mobile learning development tool. Can it stand the heat of our road-test? (How many volcano-based puns are too many for one item? Three. Three is too many).

See the review here.

6.  ELearning Professionals Group on LinkedIn: Join up, get involved – maybe win an iPad…

You’re a learning professional. You’re on LinkedIn (right? if not go quick and sign up, we’re all talking about you). And probably most of your peers are on LinkedIn – so thought it’d be nice to build a global community of learning professionals, sharing insights, asking each other questions, and generally being supportive. So we set up the ELearning Professionals Group to do just that. Come on in and join the discussion and get us all thinking about your challenge. If you need an incentive, we’re going to hold a draw at the end of January. One member of the group will win an iPad. If you have one already, you know that one is not enough.

 You can sign up here.

7.  Top tips: Don’t badmouth the next button

Yes, we could have done a 2011 predictions column. But we’ve read quite a lot of those this month and it’s our view that the crystal ball has already been rubbed a little too vigorously. So we’ll just make one meta prediction: some of the things that people predicted would be big in 2010, may happen in 2011 instead. But most (it’s all going mobile/gaming/apps) won’t become mainstream this year. We predict that most of you will still have reduced budgets and more pressure to deliver results. The most important thing this year (as it was last year and will be next year) is getting the basics right and proving your worth with cost-effective solutions that work will remain top of the list. Prediction, or reality check? Bit of both.

Instead we make a case for that forlorn appendage on any e-learning screen: the next button. Is it really so bad, or can it be your best friend?

8.  Show previews: Learning Technologies and ASTD

It’s January, it must be some more sub zero exhibition action…two biggies coming up over the next few weeks:

Learning Technologies: Jan 27th – 28th, Olympia 2, London

You know it’s the show you’ve got to be at in the UK. We’re on Stand 64 again and we’re running two seminars: one to show you our award-winning worth with M&S, and one to launch Totara. We’re even giving away M&S coffee. Well, ok, M&S are giving away their coffee (thanks Jason!) -we’re just bringing it to you. Find out more here.

ASTD TechKnowledge 2011: Feb 2-4, San Jose, CA

There’s a slight chance that it may be warmer in San Jose than London in February. So we’ve covered both bases. Join us at stand 403 for ASTD’s TechKnowledge 2011 in San Jose in early Feb -we’re running sessions on scenario design in e-learning, and Totara. Be great to see you there.

Find out more here.
