Back to school, everyone: once that meant a new pencil case and a set square. But it’s 2011 now, and you’re in the real world of learning, so let’s put some slightly more modern gifts in your backpack:

  • A free top tips app, so you can show off in e-learning design class
  • New ways to be productive and creative: Check out our new Essentials modules to give you some creative inspiration…
  • Invitation to your first two show and tells of the year, launching the new Articulate  Storyline tool in the UK, and the first Totara European conference
  • Early notice for school sports day, aka E-learning Age Awards: Kineo’s report card has five nominations this year, a record for us and our clients and teams – great start to the new term

Hope you’re well settled into September and you’ve come back from the holidays all fired up for the new learning season. There’s probably a test at the end, but that’s a long way off.

Stephen

**Dates for your Diary**

---------------------------------------------------

  1. Free App: E-learning top tips: take ‘em with you…

We’ve all been there. You’re in a meeting with your boss, your team, or your client. Someone asks you for your views on the best ways to get attention in an e-learning module. Or on the five best ways to work with SMEs. You tell them you’ll get right back to them…and run out of the room.  Your running days are over. Now you just have to reach for your one of your several iPhones (in the most subtle way of course) and check out our new Top Tips App. All of the 50 plus top tips that we’ve been sharing over the past while are there, waiting for you to use them just when you need a little inspiration.

It’s free, of course, and you can find out more here.

2.  Case study: Making systems e-learning better, with Compass Group

Systems training: always guaranteed to get people excited. Right…there must be a better way, we thought. And there is. We’ve been working with the great team at the Compass Group, and this month we share how we’ve collaborated on a set of modules that make systems training, wait for it…fun. And it’s delivered over £500k of savings along the way too. We’re really proud of it, and delighted for Compass that it’s been shortlisted in this year’s E-learning Age Awards. More on that later – you can read the case study here.

    3.   Getting creative and productive: New Kineo Essentials modules now available

Does your To-Do list look like ours? “Be creative. Be productive. Repeat.” Easy, right? Well sometimes we all need a little boost. We’ve been partnering with the good people at Good Practice to help you out. Together we’ve created a new set of Kineo Personal Effectiveness Essentials modules, to help managers and leaders develop their business skills in a focused and engaging way. New modules are now available in:

    • Creativity
    • Coaching
    • Networking
    • Time Management

Several more modules will follow later this year.

Modules can be purchased individually or in a suite, and can be hosted or dropped into your LMS. Find out more about these and the full range of Essentials modules here.

Or mail us at enquiries@kineo.com for a demo.

    4. Top tip: Making the leap from classroom to e-learning

Many of us will have children returning to school or (gulp) starting for the first time this month. Hope it wasn’t too traumatic. What if the teacher said to you ‘actually, let’s turn this classroom session into e-learning?’ In this month’s top tip, we share some guidance to help you make the leap. Kids – stay in school, for now at least.

Read this month’s top tip here.

And don’t forget, you can stick them all in your pocket by downloading our free e-learning top tips App.

    5.   Articulate storyline event: London, September 26th

We’ve been longtime fans and users of Articulate as an authoring tool, as are many of our clients.

There’s no shortage of case studies showing how Articulate has been a key part of e-learning success for clients like Cable&Wireless, O2 and McDonald’s – and we’re really pleased that our Articulate work with McDonald’s has also been nominated for an E-learning Age Award this year. New season, new tool: Articulate have created a new tool called Storyline. We’ve been playing with the beta version and we think you’re going to really like it: packed with new branching and scenario features. To give you a preview, we’re running on September 26th in London. There we will showcase Storyline in action, with our friends at Articulate, and show you some of the latest work we’re doing in Articulate Studio ’09.

The event is free, but space is limited. Find out more and register for the Articulate event.

Look out for a full review of the Storyline tool next month.

    6.  Totara European conference: London, September 28th

It’s only 8 months since Kineo, along with the other founding partners Catalyst and Kineo Pacific, launched Totara LMS, the open source LMS for the enterprise. Since then we’ve had over 25 Kineo clients move to Totara to realize the benefits, including Tesco, Guys’ and St. Thomas’ Hospital, Michelin China, and Logica. Building on the interest we’ve seen, we’re pleased to announce the first European Conference for Totara LMS customers and potential customers on 28th September 2011 in London.

The conference will bring together Totara partners, customers and potential customers to network, interact and learn from each other. The conference aims to enable learning professionals from across a wide range of industries to discuss and share their experiences. They will also highlight strategies for maximising the value of Totara, the open source LMS for enterprises based on Moodle. The event is free, but space is limited. Find out more and register for the Totara event.

    7.   Market update: CIPD’s view

Between what we’ve been seeing on e-learning and Totara LMS, it looks like things are in good shape in the industry. But it’s always nice to hear if others agree – and this month we read the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development survey on e-learning trends. It’s a good read, as always – and there’s some stats that might surprise you.

    Get this month’s update here.

    8.  Kineo news: Upcoming webinar, E-learning Age Awards, now hiring

    Upcoming Webinar:

    • Learning Technologies Webinar:  Next Thursday September 15th at 10am UK time, we’ll be running a session with Learning Technologies Group. We’ll be sharing our experience in designing and developing a suite of modules with League Football Association using a high-end design approach, which we’re delighted to say has earned us a shortlisting for an E-learning Age Award. We’ll talk about the approach and its implementation, along with our client team.

Get in touch if you’d like more info via events@kineo.com

Award Nominations: We’re delighted to have been shortlisted in five categories for the E-learning Age Awards this year, in partnership with several of our clients. For the record, they are:.

    • Best use of rapid e-learning content, for our collaboration with McDonald’s UK
    • Best e-learning project securing widespread adoption, for our work with BP

    • Excellence in the production of learning content - Not for Profit Sector – Our Olympic themed modules with League Football Education and Sportiv8.
    • Excellence in the production of learning content - Private Sector, for our work with Compass Group
    • E-learning development company of the year

And we’re not looking to take credit for this one, but we nominated Mike Booth from Cable&Wireless for the E-learning industry award for outstanding achievement – individual, and he’s been shortlisted too – well done to Mike.

We’re very proud of our teams’ efforts to get this record number of nominations for Kineo, and of course for our clients for giving us great opportunities to partner on these award-worthy projects.

We hope to see you at the Awards Ceremony in London on November 10th in London. Find out more about the awards and book a table.

Or find more details and read the case studies associated with our nominations here.
