This month we take a look at the latest learning market surveys and the impact of the recession on learning and development strategies.
The two surveys are:
- A UK survey by Xpertise of 78 employers with a combined workforce of more than 950,000 staff.
- Ambient Insight's latest US review of the US e-learning market.
The Xpertise UK survey found that the recesson has negatively impacted on the learning and development strategies of 59% of the organizations surveyed. The key highlights were:
- 66% had reduced their training expenditure
- 30% had reduced in-house training provision
Most organizations reported they had reassessed their training methods in a bid to minimise costs.
The survey confirmed that coaching is growing as a form of management training. For non-managerial staff the most popular forms of learning remain on-the-job training, informal learning and classroom training.
Predictions for next year were pessimistic with 32% expecting training expenditure to fall, 43% expected budgets to remain the same and 18% thought their training budgets would rise.
The Ambient Insight US survey estimates that whilst the rate of growth for e-learning and online learning was slowing, the US market for self paced elearning would grow from $16.7 billion in 2009 to $23.8 billion by 2014.
Sam Adkins, Chief Research Officer says "Despite the recession, and in many cases, because of it, the demand is positive in all the online learning buyer segments. There are distinct revenue opportunities in each of the buyer segments."
As can be seen from the chart above, the report forecasts a reduction in the demand for software tools and IT e-learning content and significant growth in hosted platform services from organizations.
The Ambient survey also sees significant growth in the healthcare sectors, academic sectors and in the small and medium business sector.
