Totara LMS – what a difference a year makes

Totara LMS was launched at Learning Technologies last year.  Steve Rayson, Managing Director of Kineo, one of the founding companies behind Totara, and Chairman of Totara Learning Solutions, reflects on a busy year in which a “disruptive technology” strategy has made a big impact on the LMS market.

It is hard to believe that Totara was only launched earlier this year.  As we come to the end of 2011 there are over 80 organisations using Totara and a community of over 30 partners globally selling, supporting and developing Totara. Clients of Totara range from some of the largest corporate organisations including Tesco, Vodafone Ireland, Michelin, Cable&Wireless, Logica and Guys and St. Thomas NHS Trust.

So how did we get here?

Totara is a new custom distribution of Moodle. Set to revolutionise the LMS market, it builds on the great base of Moodle and adds a whole range of enterprise features. This month we look in detail at the Competency Frameworks feature in Totara.

Moodle 2.0 is due for official launch later this month and one of its key new features is called the Community Hub. Put simply, it allows for content sharing between learning management systems. "So what?", I hear you say.

Well, given that Moodle is THE dominant LMS in the corporate world with 25% market share (not to mention a monopoly in the education world with over 70% market share in higher/further education), it's pretty clear that the community hub feature has bags of potential to shake up the highly-priced, generic content market.

Always keen to take a look disruptive technologies in the learning space (Kineo literally means 'to stir things up'), we thought we'd take a closer look at the potential of this new and innovative LMS feature.
