First a bit about the learner
Well, you are today's learner. So think about yourself. If you need to find a quick solution – say how to put up a tent – where do you go? YouTube, maybe? Or how about the latest cooking sensation videos by Fresh 'n' Tasty – bitesize videos showing you some nifty tricks in the kitchen? Pun intended by the way.
A study done by MindTools shows that most learners really do want to learn, and that most of their own learning is done at weekends on non-compulsory learning, like finding out how to put up that tent. The trouble is that, according to a recent ILM study, 94% of learners are just too busy.
What does this mean for us in the industry? It means we have to adapt our thinking. And it's already happening. So here are the five key themes that came out of Learning Technologies 2016.
The mighty five
In no particular order:
1. Anywhere, anytime, any device
What would you do without your smartphone? Shrug? Panic? With learners on the move and consuming information across different devices, we need to provide a multi-device solution.
2. Bitesize learning elements
Busy learners don't usual have the time nor patience for long structured learning courses. Several seminars claimed that learners only retained about 10% of information from the structured side of things. The best advice? Keep it short and sweet.
3. Back with a blend
Yes, the blend is back. Not so long ago, learning solutions were— due to a rise in technology and a dip in the economy—moved solely to the elearning arena. Today blended solutions are the ultimate come-back kid, with virtual classrooms, forums, face-to-face training, articles, webinars, PDFs and games all muscling in alongside classic elearning. The blend now provides a flexible experience to support a company's individual learning culture.
4. Personalised learning experiences
'Make it just for me'. That's what the learner of today wants. Content wise this can mean things like not making experienced learners go through content they already know. From the LMS side, it can also mean constructing that perfect learning path.
5. Learning at the point of need
Whether or not you're a follower of 70:20:10 – which claims that most information is learned on the job- a key theme of LT16 is that people need learning in the moment, rather than going through a structured training course out of context. Example solution: maybe a quick 'how-to' video? Think back to that tent. When would be the time to watch a 'how-to' video to put it up? A week before or when you hit the campground?
