WISE up: the new approach to learning design

The best learning content needs to recognise the changing world in which we live and learn. Kineo has kept pace, not least with Adapt and its responsive and scrollable content.

But just as Adapt has evolved as a responsive framework with continuous technological innovation, so we must also be innovative in our approaches to learning design to keep pace with the modern learner by being relevant, credible and effective.

Until now much content, even scrolling content in Adapt, has been designed along 'traditional' elearning lines. But for content to work well with modern learners, it has to move on and get WISE:

  • Web-style
  • Interactive
  • Self-directed
  • Erudite

WISE is a set of learner-centric principles based on assumptions about the common preferences and learning styles of people in today's workplace, given the ubiquity of technology and online content in everyday life. In other words - the content we design must draw from the conventions of the web, for example in being more information-based and resource-like.

Having said that, we are still in the business of creating learning content—not pure information or websites. Our content must remain interactive on the basis that engagement and immersive content, formative and summative questions, simulations, situational branching etc, are still essential in embedding and reinforcing learning.

Again the technologically-savvy learner is a skilled consumer, searcher and browser of content and therefore self-directed. That means we must design content that's more granular than ever - easy and quick to access - and deliver as micro learning or just-in-time performance support. 

This also assumes content that's erudite, by which we mean ‘true to itself’ in that the content is so to the point, so broken down, so relevant and clearly expressed and presented that there's no longer an imperative to dress it up with themes or bells and whistles! To a certain extent that assumes we’ve also got the user experience UX right across every device and platform!
 

Getting WISE to learning content

So, want to move with the times? Here's a bit more on what we mean by our WISE approach to learning content.

  • Multimedia including video
  • Interviews, documentary and drama
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Social
     

Interactive

  • Grab attention
  • Formative and summative questions
  • Gamified
  • Interactive video
  • Simulations
     

Self-directed

  • Linear and non-linear
  • Filters and dashboards
  • Granular
  • Performance support
  • Just in time at the point of need
  • Shared
     

Erudite

  • Inherently and intrinsically useful
  • Less need for novelty themes, bells and whistles
  • Real, factual, literal
  • Long and/or short form copy
  • Mapped to outcomes & measurable
  • To the point language
  • Authentic content

To which I'd add the magic ingredient: UX! All the above is only really achievable when the user experience (UX) is an extremely good one - where consuming and interacting with the content is easy and familiar.

More than ever designing good learning is about listening and learning from our learners and never standing still! Hasn’t that always been the Kineo way?
