3 new year L&D resolutions: making 2018 your best year yet

Shaping the future of learning

In 2018, we expect the elearning market to continue to shift and shake as new technologies emerge. This means that you Learning Designers can't stay static. You have to be diligent about staying on top of your game. So, what can you do in 2018 to keep your learning solution designs relevant and up-to-date? To help kickstart your 2018 planning we’ve laid out three New Year’s Resolutions that are perfect for any L&D professional looking to make 2018 their best, most productive and effective year yet.

Expand your scope

Did you know that the average L&D group uses an estimated 22 tools and platforms to deliver learning to their organizations? How many of them are you familiar with? If you're all about Storyline and nothing else, be sure to take a step back this year and look at the wide ecosystem of learning tools. There are so many new - and existing - technologies that can be added and adapted into your programs to make them both engaging and effective for your audience. Things like responsive authoring, video role play, interactive video, augmented reality, gamification, badging, learning experience layers, and adaptive learning can make a huge impact on any learning program. Now, we aren’t saying to use all of the tools all of the time, but when each is applied in a manner that makes sense for the learning content you’re providing it can prove to be a huge asset.

Consider consumer technologies

Get up to speed on the technologies your audience is using in the “real world,” as those are the behaviors and tools that people expect when they get to the workplace. When developing a course it can be tempting to add in a ton of new bells and whistles or stick to the tried and true - but either of these options could leave your audience bored and maybe even baffled. Technology that’s more advanced or complex than what people are used to could lead to confusion, while technology that’s old and dated could lead to rolled eyes and lots of frustration.

Go to a conference

Take your pick. There are so many great conferences out there that can help you hone your skills, increase your knowledge, stoke your passions. Part of creating great content and designing effective courses is looking at the big picture, and that can mean thinking outside of the box when selecting which conferences to attend. Maybe try something outside of the elearning field this year like a conference or workshop on UX or Behavior Change.

As you can see, there are a lot of great ways to kick off 2018 on the right foot when it comes to upping your learning design skills - the ones we’ve listed are just the tip of the iceberg!
