Can learning games produce real business results?

Blog posts

Shaping the future of learning

Games in learning are fast moving from pipe-dream to reality, with L&D teams progressing beyond talkingabout games to actually creating them.

At City & Guilds Kineo, we’ve been designing learning games for a while now – and have recently been awarded a Gold Award with McDonald's UK at the Elearning Awards for ‘Best Learning Game’.  We know that there are a unique set of challenges when it comes to design.

But what does gaming mean inside a corporate learning environment?

McDonald’s UK know first-hand about the benefits great game design can bring to business, having received record feedback, measurable performance improvement and incredible bottom-line results with an addictive customer service till training game.

Designed to target skill and knowledge, the game allowed learners to practice real-life scenarios in a safe environment (and without frustrating customers!).  A combination of fun, addictive game play and a clear purpose were fundamental to the success of their first foray into using games for learning.

A clear on-going business impact has also been achieved and McDonald’s have since gone on include it as part of the training programme for all new hires.
