Shaping the future of learning

Struggling to come up with an elearning course that goes beyond traditional elearning and delivers complicated concepts to adult learners in an interesting way? Here at Kineo we’ve faced just about every communication challenge you can think of, from elearning authoring tools to gamification, we’ve had to come up with a wide range of learning experiences for diverse audiences. Look no further for the inspiration you need; here is a round-up of our most engaging elearning examples to help spark some ideas.

1) Health Promotion Agency training for alcohol vendors in New Zealand

The challenge

New alcohol legislation in New Zealand meant all sellers and servers of alcohol (around 100,000 people) needed to be trained by the Health Promotion Agency (HPA) in industry best practice.

All previous alcohol licensing training was ad hoc and delivered by various individual bodies meaning there were inconsistencies across the industry. HPA knew the barriers to learning included access to training, cost and lack of motivation.

HPA needed the approval of relevant authorities, agencies, business and staff. They wanted a fun bite-sized learning approach, which gave the learner the choice to skip relevant modules, test the consequences of their actions, win learning points and provide a real life context in which to practice.

The Kineo elearning solution

Using a bespoke design approach, we created a unique game and free resource called ServeWise which encouraged learner engagement and was linked to the HPA website. Users could tailor their experience by selecting an avatar that best matched their job and personal experience. Using video and 3D animations, we simulated real-life-based scenarios around serving alcohol, asking learners to choose how they would deal with the situation from a list of options. Each challenge had a range of scores, encouraging learners to try again and refine their skills.

The results

The New Zealand hospitality industry has embraced this training tool with enthusiasm and the HPA are delighted with the reach of the project. In the first year of launch there was 3677 registered users and one of new Zealand’s leading supermarkets, Progressive Enterprises, decided to roll out the course to 4,000 of their employees as part of their compliance training.

2) EasyJet’s blended induction and onboarding programme

The challenge

As the UK’s largest airline, easyJet hires nearly 1500 people every year and they wanted these people to learn the ropes and feel part of the business as quickly as possible. They launched an Online Learning Academy in 2013 but wanted to improve the consistency of messaging and highlight the benefits of the working culture.

The Kineo elearning solution

We created a range of engaging and immersing digital resources which were specifically designed to give new starters a sense of belonging. Using a non-linear design, we included short video stories and fun visual content that allowed learners to focus on what interested them. Practical applications showed the challenges easyJet faces and what sets them apart from their competitors, giving them a positive and welcoming brand personality.

The results

The easyJet induction modules provided a high impact blended learning solution for cabin crew, pilots, engineering and maintenance teams. People loved the look and feel of the resource and it was easy to maintain after the project had launched.

3) M&S staff performance support through elearning

The challenge

Marks and Spencer’s cafes are a place where shoppers go to unwind, M&S wanted to ensure that the service reflected their well-known brand’s reliability. Through an elearning intervention, they wanted to improve mystery shopper dining scores, reduce customer complaints and deliver a return on investment.

The Kineo elearning solution

We thoroughly immersed ourselves in the M&S cafĂ© experience and examined the specific performance challenges such as avoiding long queues and streamlining staff rosters. We then created engaging elearning modules that were focused on behaviours that learners could apply to real life scenarios and really make a difference.

The results

The M&S CafĂ© elearning project won a gold award at the Elearning Awards and was described as one of the most successful training initiatives in the catering industry. 8000 learners were reached within six months of launch, with 95% positive learner feedback. M&S made ÂŁ500K in savings over alternative traditional methods in year one.
